Last Week's Meeting
January 21, 2021

President David Hanzlick welcomed all to the Club with the Camp for Kids amidst a Sea of Red with members showing their Chiefs Spirit in hopeful anticipation of another Super Bowl appearance. After members were sent to breakout rooms where the question “What is your favorite thing to do in Kansas City?” was discussed, the meeting continued with a rendition of “America the Beautiful” by the talented duo of Charlie and Carl. While it wasn’t J-Lo, it was pretty darn good. We then said the Pledge of Allegiance followed by the invocation by Jared Campbell channeling the words of Martin Luther King. President David reminded us that incoming Rotary International President, Jennifer Jones, will be speaking at the Kansas City, KS Club on January 27 from 11:30 to 1:00, if interested.

President David then called on over twenty Club committees to give brief reports as part of a Club Assembly and stated as an introduction that work on a Strategic Plan was ongoing and was nearing completion. After hearing the many reports, Past District Governor Marc Horner acccurately remarked, “What an outstanding list of opportunities for service…Big Clubs can do big things!” Without going through each of the Committee reports, here is an incomplete summary:  Children, Needy, Bagel Run, Bill Brown Coat Drive, Westside CAN Center, NOURISH Kitchen, Virtual 5K, Holiday Lights at the Camp, Hydration Station, Lead to Read Literacy, Monarch Project, Monterey, Mexico Firetruck, Butterfly Sanctuary, Zambia Restroom Project, Shoes for Orphan Souls, Invocations, Educational Excellence, Ask the Executive, Business Executive of the Year, Recruit and retain diverse new members, February 11, 2021 Guest Day, Steve Burger – 19 years chairing Program Committee and looking for help, Weekly Scribes, Music, Memorials for Passed Rotarians, Camp Sustainability Task Force, Youth Camp, Rotary Club 13 Foundation.

President David then adjourned the meeting thanking the Committee Chairs and offering Rotary Club 13 history, a Past President’s quote, and the reading of the Four Way Test. “Rotary Opens Opportunities!”

About the book:

Adam is a senior at Topeka High School, class of ’97. His mother, Jane, is a famous feminist author: his father, Jonathan, is an expert at getting “lost boys” to open up. They both work at a psychiatric clinic that has attracted staff and patients from around the world. Adam is a renowned debater, expected to win a national championship before he heads to college. He is one of the cool kids, ready to fight or, better, freestyle about fighting if it keeps his peers from thinking of him as weak. Adam is also one of the seniors who bring the loner Darren Eberheart –who is, unbeknownst to Adam, his father’s patient –into the social scene, to disastrous effect.
Rotary Youth Camp Update
By Allison Kelly

Rainy days can’t get us down at the Rotary Youth Camp! Even during the summer, a little rain just turns a pool party into a Dining Hall dance party! Did you know our dining hall can hold up to 250 people? From meals to dancing to even a concert- our dining hall is a great place to find something fun happening at camp. Despite the rain today, our Monday volunteers are working hard to complete projects that will allow us to have camp this summer. One of those projects is eating areas outside the cabins, so cabin groups can social distance during meal time.
We meet Thursdays at Noon

Thank You to the Committees of Club 13

I would like to thank the committee chairs for reporting on their progress and plans during the Club Assembly last week. My appreciation also goes out to the committee members who work diligently to make the plans a reality. I was struck, as I always am, by the level of service that Club 13 provides to the Kansas City Community.

The Club Assembly also highlighted the opportunities to serve. If you are not a member of a committee, please consider joining one. All of the committees are open to new members. The Program Committee chaired by Steve Burger and the Music Committee chaired by Charlie Huffman were both specifically requesting new members. The new Entertainment Committee chair, returning member Todd Newton, will also need committee members.

We are more than half-way through the club year. Much has been accomplished in spite of the current difficulties and much remains to be done. Thank you for all you do for the club and the community.

In honor of the 160th anniversary of Kansas statehood on January 29 – I hope my Missouri friends will indulge me – I’d like to offer a quote by President Eisenhower that fits well with the spirit of Rotary: “The people of the world genuinely want peace. Someday the leaders of the world are going to have to give it to them.”

*From last week's breakout sessions* - here are a few of the favorite ideas about things to do in Kansas City: The Zoo, July 4 Fireworks Displays, Lunch at the Nelson Atkins, Walking Trails in Johnson County, taking a drive around town, and of course, there's always the sports teams!

We are beginning discussions with St. Louis Rotary to head off to Columbia to resume our long standing tradition of an annual tourney. We did not hold it last year due to COVID, so would be nice to resume this great tradition. We will keep you updated as we go.
