The Rotary Club 13 Buzz Saw
This Week's Meeting
March 11, 2021
Our Speaker this Week is Joel Bacon, Community Relations Specialist, CSPAN. His topic will be "C-SPAN: Make Up Your Own Mind"
Joel Bacon started working at C-SPAN as in intern in the summer of 2013 and has been with the company ever since. He helps lead C-SPAN’s community relations team which seeks to engage students, teachers, civic groups, public officials and those interested in politics to share how C-SPAN’s unfiltered mission and resources can be used as a “Window on Washington” to follow the daily happenings of the Federal government.

Since interning, Joel has spent his time at C-SPAN as the receptionist, as a Book TV production assistant, as a traveling C-SPAN representative, and as a producer for C-SPAN’s signature call-in show the Washington Journal.

Joel grew up in an Air-Force family and has lived and traveled all over the map, and although he’s called Capitol Hill home for the last 6 years he recently got married and now lives happily in Northern Virginia.

Last Week's Meeting
March 4, 2021

President David Hanzlick welcomed all to the Club with the Camp for Kids. After members were sent to breakout rooms where the question “Have you had a vaccination and how did you sign up for it?” was discussed, the meeting continued with a rendition of “God Bless America” by Charlie and Carl which was cut short by a bad connection. We then said the Pledge of Allegiance followed by a moment of silence for Marie Whitmer recognizing all she did for Club 13 and the community. Jim Porter then delivered an invocation of gratefulness. Tony Andresen welcomed two guests, and the following Club Anniversaries were noted: Evie Craig (18 years), Rick Usher (11 years), Leslie Gasser (6 years), Lisa Hickok (6 years), and Bob Bibb (1 year). Barbara Dolci gave a tantalizing report from the Community Services Committee regarding two projects to be presented to the Board for approval and then presented to the Club for participation.

Evie Craig gave an update on the Warming Center by which Bartle Hall has become a refuge for the homeless this winter. As many as 400 with an average of 295 persons per day have had a bed to sleep in, two hot meals, hygiene products, clothing, and other assistance. You can sign up to help overe the next two weeks through the sign-up genius found on the kcwarmingcenter.com website. The biggest need now are men’s jeans and underwear which can be donated over the next couple of weeks. President David thanked Joe Privitera, Dallas Ziegenhorn, Sean Putney, and Kent Verden for helping with the Bagel Run in February. President David also mentioned that the fundraiser known as Greater Kansas City Day is slated to take place on May 18 with Club 13 partnering with the Monarchs minor league baseball team.

Tony Andresen then introduced our speaker, Taylor Jackson, the Constituent Services Specialist for Mayor Lucas’ office. Jackson, a former Marine of 6 years, has curated an exhibit at the Black Archives known as “Valor” highlighting the contributions made by black Americans through military service. The exhibit contains paintings depicting certain watershed events. Our speaker began the historical review with the formation of the First Rhode Island regiment in 1776 in which 140 slaves were enlisted to fight in various battles, including the Siege of Yorktown. At that time, the colonies decided to allow slaves to participate in the War with Great Britain. It became commonplace for slave owners to send their slaves to the front lines in lieu of serving themselves. The westward expansion marked initially by Lewis & Clark’s expedition saw the formation of the Buffalo Soldiers, a unit made up exclusively of black Americans, patrolling the Indian territories and providing security for families moving overland while also helping expand the telegraph system. The Buffalo Soldiers were also brought in to help quell the conflict between wealthy cattle barons and small cattle herders out West. Three thousand Buffalo Soldiers also fought in the Battle of San Juan Hill leading to Teddy Roosevelt’s strong endorsement. Our speaker ended his presentation with an Executive Order executed by President Truman in July, 1948 integrating the military and opening the door for opportunities for our speaker and other black Americans to participate equally in a diverse and multi-cultural military.

An offer was made for our articulate speaker to join our Club and I, for one, heard him say he was very interested! President David adjourned the meeting after questions recognizing Club 13’s first black member, Dr. Robert Wheeler, in 1968, a quote by President Roosevelt proclaiming “let us be people of action,” and the reading of the Four Way Test. Remember, “Rotary Opens Opportunities!”
Satellite Club Meeting
The Rotary 13 Satellite Club offers an alternative membership to Club 13’s lunch group. Instead of meeting weekly, the Satellite Club meets for one hour on the 4th Tuesday of each month at 5:30 PM via Zoom.  It was formed in response to the need for a more flexible club that accommodates the demanding schedules of today’s professionals…and yet provides many avenues of service from which to choose.  Members of the Satellite Club are full members of Club 13 and are able to participate fully in all Rotary Club activities and service projects that address needs not only in our own community but also the world.  All Club 13 members are welcome to attend Satellite Club meetings.

Rotary Youth Camp Update
By Allison Kelly

We had the pleasure of hosting Missouri Search and Rescue canine training as they prepare for their certifications. They use our grounds as one of their training locations to give their dogs the best possible instruction and training.  The Missouri Search and Rescue team often comes out during our summer sessions as well to teach campers about their organization, their dogs, and locate a “missing” counselor in the woods!

Zoom Meeting

About the book:

One summer morning, twelve-year-old Edward Adler, his beloved older brother, his parents, and 183 other passengers board a flight in Newark headed for Los Angeles. Among them is a Wall Street wunderkind, a young woman coming to terms with an unexpected pregnancy, an injured vet returning from Afghanistan, a septuagenarian business tycoon, and a free-spirited woman running away from her controlling husband. And then, tragically, the plane crashes. Edward is the sole survivor.

Edward's story captures the attention of the nation, but he struggles to find a place for himself in a world without his family. He continues to feel that a piece of him has been left in the sky, forever tied to the plane and all of his fellow passengers. But then he makes an unexpected discovery--one that will lead him to the answers of some of life's most profound questions: When you've lost everything, how do find yourself? How do you discover your purpose? What does it mean not just to survive, but to truly live?

“In the Spring a young man's fancy lightly turns to thoughts of love.”  Alfred Lord Tennyson

To rephrase this famous quote (I hope the English majors in Club will forgive me), in the spring Club 13 Rotarians turn their thoughts toward the Rotary Youth Camp.

I realize that spring does not arrive for a couple of weeks, but it’s never too early to start thinking about the work that needs to be done to prepare for the summer campers.

Laurie has developed a list of “done in a day or less” projects that can be undertaken by committees and other groups in the club. Many groups within the club worked on various projects at the camp last fall. I look forward to a similar level of activity this spring.

Of course, the intrepid Monday Morning group works on substantial projects each week. If you would like to join up with them either regularly or as a one-time volunteer opportunity, please contact Phil Kinney.

As Rotarians, we all know the joy that comes with service and fellowship. The camp provides opportunities for both.

And let’s all make a special point of enjoying spring. We deserve it after those two difficult weeks in February.
