Our speaker this week is Chuck Haddix, KCUR Fish Fry/MARR Sound Archives

In 1984, Chuck Haddix aka Chuck Haddock joined the staff of KCUR as a jazz producer. The next year, he began producing the Fish Fry.
He is the former director of the Marr Sound Archives, a collection of 350,000 historic sound recordings housed in the Miller Nichols Library at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
Haddix also teaches Kansas City jazz history at the Kansas City Art Institute.
Over the years, Haddix has contributed to a wide variety of theatrical, recording, video and film projects including “Cronkite Remembers” a biography of Walter Cronkite, Robert Altman's “Kansas City” and Merchant-Ivory's “Mr. and Mrs. Bridge.”
His articles have appeared in Down Beat and Living Blues Magazine. He is the coauthor of Kansas City Jazz: From Ragtime to Bebop–A History for Oxford University Press and author of Bird: The Life and Music of Charlie Parker for the University of Illinois Press.

Thank you for your patience as we navigated the transition of administrative duties to Kandi Kos beginning on May 1 this year. While we were getting her up to speed, we were also transitioning bookkeeping methods and it took far more time than anticipated. Going forward, we will adhere to the standards set in the previous Rotary year. Please see below for a recap of those policies. If you have not paid your 7/1 annual/quarterly/monthly dues yet, please do so at your earliest convenience. Your invoice was emailed to you. If you have not received it, please let Kandi know and she will resend it.
Payment policies:
1-Credit Card Payments: If you wish to pay with credit cards, you can still do so, but there will be a 3.5% convenience charge.
2-Checks are only accepted for the annual payment option. Checks for annual dues MUST be received by June 20 of each year, i.e. 10 days prior to the commencement of the new Rotary year. (Thank you for your patience as we navigated this with the transition to Kandi taking on her new role.)
3-All other dues payments will automatically be deducted. Payments will need to be coordinated with Kandi. Members will need to indicate in a signed document how they want to pay (credit/debit/ACH) and how often (quarterly/monthly/annually). Payments for events will still be initiated by members.
4- Members now have the option to pay via ACH payments. There is no fee associated with this.
6-There will be a $10 per month late fee added to any past due amounts. Furthermore, any member that is not current when the RI and District dues are due, December and July, will be dropped from the membership count. Once current, the member will be added back to the active list. This is necessary to avoid the Club having to pay RI and District dues for members who are not current.

The 5th Annual Rotary Regatta is coming to Lake Jacomo August 28–30, and we need your help spreading the word. Please watch your email in the next couple of days for a social media share kit with six ready-to-use posts. We will also include a matching flyer for each post.
Our goals are simple:
Attract sailors and spectators.
Recognize the Rotary Club of Kansas City and Jacomo Sailing Club and raise support for Rotary Youth Camp.
President Neil Barnett welcomed all to the Club with the Camp for Kids at the Crowne Plaza Hotel. After saying the Pledge of Allegiance, Adam Kinsinger delivered an invocation reciting a thoughtful poem on what it means to give. Mary Lou Toolan, a former member of Club 13 and a visiting Rotarian from the Rotary Club of Cocoa Beach, FL came to the podium for words of welcome from Florida and a banner exchange (only our Club’s banners are on order). Ted Higgins gave an update on the difficult circumstances facing the Higgins Brothers Surgicenter for Hope in Haiti as gang violence continues. Jane Lee announced that the Ask the Exec program is back and will hold its first event on August 27 at 5:30 at Penny’s In the Village. Tom Woolwine announced that the Aixois dinner to kick off the Regatta to be held August 28-30 is sold out but there is still time and opportunity to make a donation. $30K toward the $50K fund-raising goal has been received so far. Tom then stayed at the podium and led us in the singing of the Happy Birthday Song to the August celebrants. The following Club anniversaries were recognized: Phil Kinney, 47 years; Ed Corley, 40 years; Terry Kilroy, 38 years; Duane Benton, 37 years; Rick Kappa, 34 years; Tim Tholen, 15 years; John Herron, 6 years; Karla Schuning, 2 years; and Abby Yellman, 2 years. Another Happy Bucks session then took place with various mirthful announcements made.
Tony Andresen then introduced a trio of impressive women from Outreach International, Elene Cloete, CEO and President, Charlotte Beshe-Powell, Chief Development and Marketing Officer, and Laura Goettsch, Donor Services and Operations Manager. Elene Cloete took the microphone and made a presentation regarding the work Outreach Intl. performs around the world. Headquartered in the Crossroads, the organization was founded in 1979 and is focused on poverty reduction around the world and particularly in the Philippines, Zambia, Cambodia, Nicaragua, and other struggling countries. Outreach Intl., not unlike Rotary, brings people together and asks them what they need and then supports them in achieving the solutions developed. Possible solutions are developed by the community, decisions are made by the community on the solutions to be implemented, and the community does the work with financial support provided by Outreach Intl. The organization believes that people have the ability to do amazing things but are limited by the lack of resources. Our speaker illustrated how the process works through the story of Sengali, a woman living in a small town in India. There was a desire to do away with open defecation and develop and maintain toilets for the community. Sengali took the lead, and 127 toilets were built followed by 19 additional projects consisting of clean water, housing, water irrigation, and other projects. In total, the community received $662,000 in benefits. Most of the projects undertaken through Outreach Intl. remain active with new projects developed within the community and supported by Outreach Intl. During the Q&A, Ms. Cloete indicated that Outreach Intl. has worked with Rotary from time to time. She identified a water project in Nicaragua in which Outreach Intl. partnered with a San Francisco Rotary club. Many of the projects are led by women of the communities served, because the leaders and the doers are the women.
President Neil announced upcoming meetings. We then said the Four-Way Test, and the meeting was adjourned.
The bowling league is enjoying their off-season and still reliving their victory against St. Louis. They will be back in September.

Refurbished Logos from the Rotary Youth Camp
Thanks to PDG Rick Simon and IHD Powder Coating. They took these two very old Rotary wheels that were rusted and covered in multiple coats of paint. They burned the old paint off, sand blasted them and powder coated them. They are brand new again. Thank you!!!
Rotary Reunion Picnic a Success!
Fifty-seven Rotarians and guests attended the Rotary picnic on Thursday, July 30. Several kids and at least one grandfather swam in the pool while the others mingled in the dining hall and visited with the four former Rotarians in attendance. A special treat was the appearance of 100-year-old Bill Buckner who was a long-time member of Club 13 and a fervent supporter of the Camp. Laurie and her staff laid out a fine buffet which was supplemented by a table of assorted desserts provided by many Rotarians. (A shout out to Kelly Collins for her homemade peach cobbler!) Following a warm welcome from President Neil, the Magician Scott Henderson provided an entertaining show which included tricks that amazed the children in the audience and clever deceptions that baffled the adults. A special thank you to volunteers Neil Barnett, Blake Fry, Tom Woolwine, Jane Lee, Kelly Collins, Jesse Collins, Lon Lawton, Bob Bibb, Lee Brumitt, and Sally Bibb.
Rotary Connection from South Africa
President Neil Barnett met up with Stan Goodenough, a Rotarian visiting from the Rotary Club of Hilton & Howick in South Africa this past weekend. Stan had reached out through the Club 13 website mentioning that he was going to be in Kansas City for a family reunion. Although his plans couldn't accommodate a visit to one of our regular club meetings, it's very exciting that Neil could meet with him to share stories, especially because Neil has family roots in South Africa!
