This Week's Meeting
August 29, 2024

Our Speaker this week is Brian Platt, City Manager, KCMO.
Brian Platt is the City Manager for the City of Kansas City, Mo. When Platt started work in December of 2020, he was immediately faced with the challenge of fighting a pandemic while still delivering basic services with a shrinking budget. He tackled that challenge by finding answers that work for Kansas City and its residents.

Brian previously served as City Manager for Jersey City, New Jersey. He has served as Jersey City's first Chief Innovation Officer and established the City's Office of Innovation in 2015. His previous work experience includes management consulting with McKinsey & Company and serving as a kindergarten teacher with Teach for America. Mr. Platt earned his Master of Public Administration Degree at Columbia University and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Philosophy at Emory University.

Congrats on achieving the Rotary Citation!
The Rotary Citation awards recognize the hard work clubs do throughout the year. Working to achieve the Club Excellence goals helps clubs engage their members, increase their impact, stay relevant in their communities, and run more efficiently. A welcoming and engaging club not only fosters a positive experience for its members, but also reflects the values of Rotary. When clubs achieve these goals, they contribute to the overall health and culture of Rotary for generations to come.
Join or Die Film Screening

“Join or Die” is a film about why you should join a club — and why the fate of America depends on it. In this feature documentary, follow the half-century story of America’s civic unraveling through the journey of legendary social scientist Robert (Bob) Putnam, whose groundbreaking “Bowling Alone” research into America’s decades-long decline in community connections could hold the answers to our democracy’s present crisis.

Flanked by influential fans and scholars — from Hillary Clinton, Pete Buttigieg, and Surgeon General Vivek Murthy to Eddie Glaude Jr., Raj Chetty, and Priya Parker — as well as inspiring groups building community in neighborhoods across the country, join Bob as he explores three urgent civic questions: What makes democracy work? Why is American democracy in crisis? And, most importantly… What can we do about it?

Join us Thursday, Sept. 19 and bring a friend! Doors open at 5:00 pm; the screening will begin at 5:45 pm. The film length is 1 hour, 40 minutes.   Popcorn and soda will be served. PLEASE REGISTER ON LINE.

Youth Camp Update
Laurie Mozley, Camp Superintendent
This past weekend the Rotary Youth Camp hosted the BSA Catholic Committee’s annual camp out.  Approximately 60 campers braved the thunderstorm and the heat to spend the weekend here.  They completed their merit Badge classes and service project with plenty of time for GaGa ball and basketball.

Centennial Memory:
Through the years, the thank you letter keep arriving at the camp.  These letter remind us that the camp experience really is life changing for our campers and well worth all the volunteer efforts to keep providing this for the disabled/disadvantaged youth.
