GSE Team Visit & Club Cookout at Camp!

The Rotary Chileans are coming soon and will be with our club April 14-20.  They will be visiting our regular meeting on Thursday, April 19 and we will  learn a little about their work and service in Chile.  As service-minded Rotarians,  that afternoon they will join us at our camp to help with spring projects, followed by a cookout.

Please join us for a special afternoon at the camp.  Even if you can’t spend the afternoon with us working, COME FOR THE COOKOUT  at 5:00 to share Rotary Friendship and make connections and memories on our last night with them! We send them off to St. Joseph on Friday morning.  Sign up HERE to attend the Cookout.

This Week's Meeting
March 15, 2018
Our Speaker this week is Vivien Jennings, owner Rainy Day Books. Her topic is, "A Conversation: The Public and Private Side of Authors."
Rainy Day Books’ author event calendar is one of the best and busiest in America with over 300 author events a year. The events feature a diverse array of authors to Kansas City, from debut novelists destined for greatness, to prize-winners, bestsellers, and the biggest names in the news. Come hear the behind the scenes stories of these fascinating people from the perspective of our very own Vivien Jennings!

Vivien Jennings is the founder and President of Rainy Day Books, Kansas City’s oldest independent bookstore in the Kansas City metropolitan area. Since opening in November of 1975 Rainy Day Books has provided the greater Kansas City community with a gathering place, a wellspring for ideas and creative thought, and an ongoing voice for literacy and awareness.

Rainy Day Books is considered one of the leading independent booksellers in America, profiled in the National Publishers Weekly for having “set the Gold Standard” for the industry for author events. It has been nominated for the National Bookseller of the Year by the American Bookseller Association, on whose Advisory Council Vivien has served.

In the early 1990s Rainy Day Books began placing a greater emphasis on author events as a form of community outreach. Through community partnerships and innovative author event planning, the bookstore quickly became known nationally for the new strategy. Authors and publishers alike began to solicit appearances at Rainy Day Books.
Rotary Book Discussion Group

Event: Rotary Book Discussion Group

Date: Monday, March April 2, 2018, 6:30 – 8:00 PM
Location: Rainy Day Books
2706 West 53rd Street
Mission, KS 66205

Please join us for Rotary Book Discussion Group for the discussion of the book “Lincoln in the Bardo” by George Saunders. The book is available at Rainy Day Books and the discussion will be led by Vivien Jennings.  All Rotarians and guests are welcome.

About the book:
February 1862.  With the Civil War less than one year old, President Lincoln’s beloved eleven-year-old son, Willie, lies gravely ill.  In a matter of days Willie dies and is laid to rest in a Georgetown cemetery.  Newspapers report that a grief-stricken Lincoln returns, alone, to the crypt several times to hold his boy’s body.  From that seed of historical truth, George Saunders spins an unforgettable story that breaks free of its realistic framework into a thrilling, supernatural realm, deploying a kaleidoscopic, theatrical panorama of voices - living and dead, historical and invented - to ask a timeless question: How do we live and love when we know that everything we love must end?

Shoes for Orphan Souls
Thank you to all members who have made financial contributions to the "2018 Shoes for Orphan Souls Project". Many of you gave valuable time to shop and donate shoes and socks. The International Committee appreciates your strong support. There is still time to give to this important project!!!  Donations will be accepted through April 19, 2018. The packing party is schedule for Saturday, April 21st starting at 1:00 p.m. (more information to come).

For those club members who might have interest, a Shoes Delivery Trip to Guatemala, is scheduled for the dates of July 21-28, 2018. This is a wonderful opportunity to add to the Rotary service experience. The link below is the site to register for the trip.

Spring Swing
Bowling News!
"Strike Force" is pulling away from the crowd with 26 win and only 6 defeats in the second half.  Dave Boone, Mark Lieb and Jane Lee look strong with only five weeks of bowling left in the season.

Dennis McKeehan picked up the 3-6-7-split and Jane Lee covered the 3-10-7.  Susan Prestia and Bob Lager continue to be the most improved bowlers. Erik Andersen rolled 47 pins over his average. Erik is Henrik's (shockingly average) son. Congratulations all.
