Tom & Jerry/Ugly Sweater Party
“A Tom and Jerry is a traditional Christmastime cocktail in the United States, devised by British journalist Pierce Egan in the 1820s. It is a variant of eggnog with brandy and rum added and served hot, usually in a mug or a bowl. Wikipedia”. It is the opinion of various sources interviewed at today’s meeting/party that “Tom and Jerry” got attached to the name of this annual event back in the mists of ancient Club 13 history because the libation of choice served at the party was a bowl full of Tom and Jerry.
There was no bowl full of Tom and Jerry in sight today. Free spirits were available at the bar instead. Seems to this lowly scribe that if the event is going to be a Tom and Jerry Party, then Tom and Jerry should be served.  Methinks the Ancient Rotarians had a good thing going there.
Anyway, the meeting began with the usual activities, a Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag (during which no Rotarians were observed kneeling...), followed by a thoughtful invocation by Pat Macdonald, and introductions of our several guests and visiting Rotarians by Mandy.
Meanwhile, pacing around the stage was some kind of pink/red bunny suited character, who reported that this was to honor “A Christmas Story” memory of “A pink nightmare.”  It was, indeed, that. Eventually, it came to light that lurking inside said suit was Pres. David McCaughey.
Attending the festivities was our District Governor, Allen Garner, who brought us a few words of greeting and shock at the sight of “the Pink nightmare.”
Then the event was taken over by the Music Committee, ably chaired by Bob Lager, and his trusty band of cohorts, including C. Bolte (on the keyboard, and serving up an unusually delightful and spirited accompaniment for the carols to follow - appears there may be life left in the gentleman after all), and Harlan Stamper, Charlie Huffman, Chuck  Eddy, and Woody Davis, (who was staging a sit down strike because his name was not on the program).
So, we sang a bunch of Christmas carols, and then The Pink Nightmare wished us a happy Christmas and Happy Holiday, and we were done - except for those who lingered at the bar.
Next week is the annual Children and Grandchildren’s Party, and you can bet your bottom dollar that there won’t be any bowl of Tom and Jerry there, either. RSVP anyway.
P.S.:  Results of the election of new officers and directors:
Pres. Elect: Joe Privitera
Treasurer: Randy Sisk
Directors: Mary Kingsley, Lon Lawton, Paul Searcy
