Kansas City's Rotary Youth Camp Featured on Rotary.org

As Past President Marc Horner put it, "It took 92 years to make it into the Rotary International newspaper but here we are. For those of my friends who are not in Rotary, this is what that Rotary Camp entrance just east of Lake Jacomo means to so many of us!"

We couldn't have said it better! Please take a moment and read this fantastic article by RI Staff writer Arnold R. Grahl.

Last Week's Meeting
Last week's Meeting
May 25, 2017

It was a gorgeous late Spring Day on May 25th, 2017 when Jim Porter called our meeting to order at the Rotary Youth Camp. Jim Porter was in charge of a refreshing invocation as our meeting was going to honor the three Rotarians who passed away this past year in Kenneth Beardsley, Dr. Gerald Lee, & Alex Petrovic. Our patriotic song was God Bless America which made perfect sense for Memorial Day weekend. Jim Porter also served as our Welcomer for guests and families of Rotarians.

Special announcements are the meeting next week on June 1st WILL NOT be at the Gallery event space.  We will be having our meeting at the UMKC Bloch School of Entrepreneurship at UMKC with our own Jeff Hornsby serving as the program's host.

Please sign up for Rotary Night at the Zoo on June 22nd. Flyers are on the table the cost per person is $15 until June 19th and they goes up to $20 a person after this date. You can signup through the Rotary office or on Club Runner.

Thank you to all the volunteers who helped at the Camp Work Days on May 13th & 20th. Your help was greatly appreciated.

David McCaughey started off the program reading some nice things prepared by George Gordon in remberance about Dr. Gerald Lee who was born February 9, 1932 and passed away September 17, 2016 at 84 years old. Dr. Lee was a member of Club 13 for almost 16 years having joined October, 2000.  Dr. Lee was married almost 42 years, was an Eagle Scout, played 4 years of Varsity Football @ the University of Washington before coming to the University of Missouri to eventually become a Chief Cardiologist.

Jim Porter said some nice things in remembrance about Alex Petrovic who was born June 14, 1948 and passed away February 18, 2017 at just 68 years old.  Alex joined Rotary Club 13 in October, 2006 and was a member for over a decade. Alex grew up in Independence, MO and graduated from De La Salle HS. He went to Benedictine University and as Jim Porter stated, he really was the perfect Rotarian with regards to the 4 way test.  Alex had a number of family members in attendance.

David McCaughey said some nice things about Kenneth Beardsley who was born on March 5th, 1933 in Russell, KS and passed away on February 8th, 2017. Kenneth loved to read and travel as David noted and he was also an Eagle Scout.  He graduated from the University of Kansas in 1955 and married his college sweetheart on October 8th, 1955 and they were married almost 62 years!

Jim Porter concluded our ceremony with the Tree Ceremony at the end.  It was a touching tribute to 3 great men who are going to be missed a lot by other club members.

Next week's meeting will be at the UMKC Bloch School of Entrepreneurship! Hope you had a great Memorial Day Weekend!
